More and more people are asking their dentists in the greater San Jose area about sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry alleviates the stress and anxiety they may experience at the idea of visiting a dentist.
Dentists generally recommend minimal sedation for patients who feel just a little uneasy and would like to relax during a dental treatment. This kind of sedation can be administered via a pill before the dental appointment or with nitrous oxide gas in the dentist’s chair. Moderate sedation is available via oral or IV medication. Also known as “conscious sedation,” this type of sedation dentistry allows patients to stay completely awake during the treatment, but they pleasantly forget the trip afterwards. Deep sedation is generally recommended for dental procedures like root canals and wisdom tooth removal. Deep sedation involves putting a patient completely to sleep for the duration of a treatment, and medication is administered intravenously. Unlike with moderate sedation, patients are unable to communicate during treatment.
