San Jose, CA Oral Cancer Screenings

One of the important dental services we offer at Moradi Signature Smiles is oral cancer screening. While it’s not uncommon for patients to think that they will know when they have oral cancer symptoms, we recommend our patients opt for it during a dental checkup. Since the goal is to identify mouth cancer early, we strongly suggest incorporating this into your regular dental routine.

Detect Mouth Cancer Before It’s Too Late

The earlier that mouth cancer is identified, the better chance patients have for effective treatment. Putting off an oral cancer screening until you feel you may have symptoms dramatically reduces the chance of effectively treating cancer. Oral cancer screening’s goal is detecting either mouth cancer or precancerous lesions that can lead to mouth cancer. Spotting cancer or lesions in their early stages make cancer easier to treat. We recommend oral cancer screenings to our patients who are at a higher risk of oral cancer.

Common Factors

Common factors that may put you at a higher risk of oral cancer include:

  • Any kind of tobacco use (cigarettes, pipes, chewing tobacco, snuff, etc.)
  • Heavy, prolonged use of alcohol
  • A previous oral cancer diagnosis

If you fall under any of these categories, we strongly advise you to schedule a screening as soon as possible. We can also recommend lifestyle changes or other methods that can help reduce your risk of oral cancer (stopping smoking, for example). It is important to note that not all mouth cancers can be detected since some areas of abnormal cells could possibly go undetected. However, this is not a reason to avoid a cancer screening.

What Happens in an Oral Screening

If you’ve made an appointment for an oral cancer screening you don’t have to do anything special to prepare—it’s done as part of a dental exam or checkup. We check the inside of your mouth, examining it for mouth sores or patches. We also check the tissues in your mouth for lumps and anything else that may seem abnormal. In the case you have either complete or partial dentures that can be removed, we’ll ask you to remove them for a more thorough examination. In some cases, we may also use some special tests, such as asking you to rinse your mouth with a blue dye that can cause abnormal cells to appear blue. If we find any signs that may point towards oral cancer or lesions, don’t worry. We’ll schedule a follow-up to double check our original diagnosis and then schedule a biopsy or refer you to a specialist. If at any point in the procedure you have any questions, ask your local dentist—we are here for you!

We recommend you have a screening every six months, along with your regular dental checkups. To schedule your oral cancer screening in San Jose, CA, call the Moradi Signature Smiles office today!
